LIVE RITE - Will Change Make You Ill?
In the early 1970’s two stress experts at Washington University found that stress due to important ‘life changes’ was an accurate predictor of future illness. They drew up an index of 43 possible changes and rated each one for stressfulness on a scale from 1 to 100. (Financial factors have been generalized to allow for inflation.)
To rate yourself add up your scores for all the events you have experienced during the past year. A total of over 150 gives a 50% chance of health change occurring in the near future. A score of over 300 a 90% chance of physical, mental or spiritual ill health around the corner – unless effective anti-stress measures are taken.
100 Death of spouse
73 Divorce
65 Marital separation
63 Jail term
63 Death of close family member
53 Personal injury or illness
50 Marriage
47 Loss of job
45 Marital reconciliation
45 Retirement
44 Change in health of family member
40 Pregnancy
39 Sexual problems
39 Gain of a new family member
39 Business readjustment
38 Change in financial state
37 Death of a close friend
36 Change to a different type of work
35 Change in number of arguments with spouse
31 High mortgage
30 Foreclosure of mortgage or loan
29 Change in responsibility at work
29 Son or daughter leaving home
29 Trouble with in-laws
28 Outstanding personal achievement
26 Spouse begins or stops work
26 Beginning or ending education
25 Change in living conditions
24 Changed personal habits
23 Trouble with boss
20 Change in working hours or conditions
20 Moving house
20 Changing schools
19 Change in leisure pursuits
19 Change in church activities
18 Change in social activities
17 Low or medium mortgage loan
16 Altered sleep habits
15 Change in number of family get-togethers
15 Change in eating habits
13 Going on holiday
12 Approaching Christmas season
11 Minor violations of the law
You can use the index to predict and plan changes in the future such as moving house, taking out a loan or starting a new venture so that stressful events do not all happen at once or build up to a crisis.
- Natural Medicine p 331
Most people with a score of 300 or over will need physical, mental/emotional, and/or spiritual, either informal or formal, help to manage their passage of change.
Do what needs doing. Give yourself what you need.

LIVE RITE - 5 - The Power of Intriguing Words
So you are consistently on your way to registering a healthier body mass.
These may help you get there with more fun and quirkiness:
For example
“My goal for this week is fun 61 (kg)”
“This month I work towards true 72”
“This week I work to be 83”
“Sure 94”
“My goal is alive 65”
“March is my month to reach slick 76”
“At last 87! Heaven!”
“Great 98”
“I’m in line at 69…”
”Increasingly free at 70”
On my mirror, my fridge and my scale are the motivating words
as I drop persistently towards my goal range…
Free 70
In line 69
Great 68
67 Heaven!
Slick 66
Alive 65
Sure 64
Be 63 (top of goal range)
True 62 (middle of goal range)
Fun 61 (lower end of goal range)
